THE BLAZING DONKEY
The Blazing Donkey is tucked away quietly in the Kent countryside and only a short distance from the ancient cinque port town of Sandwich. We are a little over an hour from London by road and rail and the cross channel port of Dover is a short drive. The magical cathedral city of Canterbury and seaside towns of Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Deal are also within very easy reach.
Once known as ‘The Jolly Gardener’ our pub-hotel, originally a farm labourers dwelling, was a meeting place for gentlemen florists in the late 1700s. An annual ‘Florists’ Feasts’ was often held here – a competition to showcase their latest seedlings to their peers, followed by a raucous feast of food and drink.
It can still be raucous today” jokes The Blazing Donkey’s Director Trefor Squire. “..our pub was here before the hotel and we’ve deliberately kept our style quite informal so it’s always been a popular meeting place.. In the Summer the beautifully kept gardens are a world away from the daily hum-drum of our busy lives and the perfect hideaway for a spot of lunch.” Trefor continues “Our food and drink are of the highest quality but our restaurant is intentionally not fine-dining and the bar purposely “pubby” – Together, the bar and restaurant are extremely popular locally, come without all the fuss but with all the charm.
The Blazing Donkey has been under the proud ownership of the Martin family since 1989. The award winning hotel accommodation was opened to much acclaim in 1995 by the late Peter Alliss and became popular very quickly. Gardening has always been a passion for the Martins’ so imagine their delight when in 1997 their hard work to create such a beautiful environment was recognised when the Blazing Donkey became the first ever property in England to be licensed to host outdoor civil marriages. Today, The Blazing Donkey is recognised as one of Kent’s most popular wedding and party venues.
We have accommodation to suit all your preferences from, through cosy ground floor rooms in our converted stables to romantic suites in the main house. You can choose from single, double, twin, family and pet-friendly rooms. The luxurious four-poster bridal suite is every bit as special as you could imagine. Our main house guest rooms are located on the first floor of the building and enjoy super views of the surrounding countryside. Our stable rooms are arranged within a pretty courtyard with views across to the gardens
Our restaurant is intentionally not fine dining – it's popular locally and comes without all the fuss -but with all the charm – and our food; deliciously unpretentious and unashamedly British. We’ve turned the traditional restaurant layout on its head – formality is gone, replaced instead with a rustic charm. In the Winter guests can park themselves in one of our deep, oversized sofas or armchairs and properly curl up beside one of our inviting roaring fires.
